Privacy policy
The short version
- The app collects no personal data. No account, no ads, no analytics, no trackers.
- The app has no internet permission, so it cannot send anything anywhere.
- The microphone is used only if you clone a sound. The recording is analysed on your phone and thrown away at once.
- If you write to us, we receive your email and use it only to answer you.
Who we are
White Noise is made by For People Lab, an independent developer: Dinu Laurentiu Gabriel, Romania. For anything about this policy or your data, write to support@forpeoplelab.com.
What the app does not do
White Noise does not ask for an account, show ads, or contain analytics, crash reporting or tracking tools. It does not use your location. Android lets an app reach the internet only with the internet permission, and White Noise does not have it: you can check this in the app's page in your phone's settings. Nothing the app knows can leave your phone through the app.
What stays on your phone
To work, the app keeps a few things in its own private storage on your phone, where other apps cannot read them:
- your settings: the sounds, volume, timer, tone, language and look you chose;
- the sounds you cloned, as about a hundred numbers that describe their tone (never a recording), and the names you gave them;
- the day your free trial started, and whether you bought the app;
- how many nights you used the app, counted only to decide when to show the rating window, once.
We never see any of this. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its data in your phone's settings, deletes all of it.
Android backup
If backup is turned on in your phone's settings, Android may include what the app keeps on your phone, as listed above, in your phone's backup to your Google account, encrypted, so that a new phone can restore it. This backup is made and kept by Google under Google's privacy policy; we cannot access it. Whether you bought the app is never included: on a new phone, that comes from Google Play. You can turn backup off in your phone's settings.
Microphone
The app asks for the microphone only when you tap to clone a sound (a fan, for example), never before. The sound is recorded for a few seconds into the phone's memory, analysed there, and thrown away at once. It is never saved as a file and never sent anywhere. Only the description of its tone is kept, as described above. If you never clone a sound, the microphone is never used.
Health
White Noise only plays sounds. It does not track your sleep and does not measure or keep any health data. The nights it counts, as described above, are nights the app played, not nights you slept. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat any condition: for sleep problems or tinnitus, please see a doctor.
Purchases
The free trial and the one-time purchase go through Google Play. Google handles the payment under Google's privacy policy; we never see your card or payment details. The app asks Google Play, through the Play Store app on your phone, whether you bought it, and keeps the answer on the phone. As for every app sold on Google Play, Google shows us the order details it gives all developers, such as the order number, date, product, price and country, so that we can handle refunds.
Ratings
After seven nights of use, the app may show Google Play's own rating window, once. What you write there goes to Google Play under its rules; the app does not see it.
Voice assistants
If you ask a voice assistant such as Google Assistant or Gemini to play a sound in White Noise, the assistant handles your voice under its own privacy policy. The app receives only the words of the request, uses them to choose the sound, and keeps nothing else.
Notifications
Notifications are shown by your phone: the playback controls, and two reminders before the free trial ends. They are made on the phone; nothing is sent.
When you write to us
If you write to us at support@forpeoplelab.com, your email passes on its way through Cloudflare, which delivers mail for our domain and keeps a short delivery log (sender address, time, delivery status) for a limited time, to run and protect the service. The email itself is kept in a Gmail mailbox (Google). Cloudflare and Google may process it outside the EU, including in the United States, under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. We use your address and your message only to answer you and to improve the app. We do not add you to any list, and we do not share or sell your email. We delete a conversation when it is no longer needed, and at any time if you ask.
This website
This website has no cookies, no analytics and no external fonts or scripts. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes technical data such as your IP address to deliver the pages and protect them from attacks.
Children
White Noise is made for adults. Its sounds for babies are meant to be played by parents. The app is not directed at children, and it collects no data from anyone.
Your rights
The only personal data we may hold is what you send us by email. We process it to answer you, as you asked, and in our legitimate interest in improving the app. Wherever you live, you can ask us at any time to see it, correct it or delete it, or object to its use, by writing to support@forpeoplelab.com. You can also complain to a data protection authority: in Romania, ANSPDCP, or the authority of the country where you live.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If the app ever starts to collect anything, we will say so here and in the app's update notes before it does.
